Emergency First-Aid Fundamentals teaches students to become their families’ first responders. From learning how to assess a patient’s condition to delving into proper treatment of chest and spinal injuries, broken bones, shock, serious bleeding and more, this curriculum will prepare students to help others when only minutes can mean the difference between life and death.
Students will learn how to assess both the safety of a scene and the seriousness of a situation to better understand the need for additional help and the risks to any rescuer’s personal safety.
The assessment and treatment of a number of traumatic emergencies, including severe bleeding, a penetrating chest injury, flail chest, severe burns, musculoskeletal trauma (injury to the bones, muscles, ligaments or tendons), and trauma to the head and eye.
Students will learn how to deal with medical emergencies that are much more likely to occur than a gunshot wound. These emergencies include a stroke, cardiac arrest, a diabetic emergency and more.
This class covers what type of gear might be included in three different-sized emergency first-aid kits to fit three different needs (or three different “missions”).
Participants will learn how to control severe arterial bleeding using commercial tourniquets or improvised methods, apply compression bandages, pack wounds and treat chest injuries.
Students will learn how to identify sudden cardiac arrest (including checking breathing status and for a carotid pulse), how to perform chest compressions, how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED), when and how to perform rescue breaths, and what to do when paramedics arrive on the scene.
Students will learn the START Triage System and participate in a mock triage exercise where they will be given the opportunity to properly triage 10 victims of a mass shooting.
